MR. VON LUNEN
I read your article in the Oregonian this morning about border collies. I think you need to delve into the history of herding breeds before you make nominations for the state dog breed. As I understand it, there are a number of herding breeds today which have common ancestry from the “collie type” dogs of the British Isles. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, modern breeds began to emerge from these origins in the locations and environments where they were being used and bred. Border collies were developed on the English/Scottish border, English shepherds in the Eastern United States, and Australian shepherds in the Western United States. There are a number of historians of the Australian shepherd breed who can document their dog lineages and types. Border collies were introduced much later into the area, and although they are an important herding breed today, there are still many working Australian shepherds and breeders in Oregon.
For just a beginning taste of Australian shepherd history, I would refer you to the Mistretta website http://webspace.webring.com/people/gm/mistretta_aussie/ where a history of that Oregon family’s dogs are recounted. Also probably the most historic breeding family is the Hartnagles of Colorado and here is a link to their history page http://www.lasrocosa.com/history.html. There also have been quite a few history articles about Aussies in the Aussie Times magazine of the Australian Shepherd Club of America (asca.org). I’m sure they would help you out with your research.
I’m sure Mr. Folck loves his dogs and they are great, but I think that history needs to be corrected here. I’m a very proud owner of two Aussies and am concerned about the history and future of this wonderful dog breed.

Thanks a bunch. I sent a similar message as well to Gov. Kulongoski and cc’d my original message to Tina Mistretta and the Aussie Times editor. The second Oregonian article in the opinion page had stated that the governor and one of the state senators were backing this border collie bid. Personally I think that declaring any particular dog breed the “state dog” is a bit ridiculous. I just didn’t like the obfuscation of history that occurred in the journalism, or lack of it.
