Received this from a friend today and thought it was worth sharing.

In the Seattle area the more likely to be seen Amanita look like these.....the distinguishing marks are the white scales on the cap, the bright color in the red/yellow ones (they are really gorgeous) and a ring or veil on the stalk. They seem to grow more singly around here, not in large groups, tho I did find a huge fruiting of them at Ocean Shores several years ago. Also saw a couple in Carkeek Park a few weeks ago. They contain a powerful nerve toxin.

[Jen] A forward, for all you pet owners..(Donato is a dog, who died from eating these).

[Jen]
This week Lisa, my friend's sister who lives near me in Woodside, CA found mushrooms in her lawn area.  Since she was aware of what happened to Donato she was concerned for her kids and dogs.  Lisa contacted the resident ranger  from Jasper Ridge who is also a member of the Mycological Society of San Francisco. At first Lisa was told that Death Caps would not show up till way into the rainy season, but after seeing Lisa's pictures the ranger immediately drove down and positively identified the mushrooms as Death Caps.  Lisa hadn't found just one... she had picked a bag of them.  Yesterday she found more.

Though the highest density of  occurrences is around the San Francisco Bay Area, there are two distinct ranges for the Death Cap.  One along the west coast (  as far south as Los Angeles County and north to Vancouver Island, Canada) and the second on the East Coast (from the Atlantic Coastal Plain of Maryland northward to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and east to the coastal islands of Maine).  In California, Death Caps are associated with oak trees, in Oregon with chestnut or filbert trees and on the east coast with pines.
The other problem....experts say the Death Cap's range is spreading and they are becoming more prevalent.

Unfortunately, I found out too late and lost Donato, my beautiful pup to this mushroom.   In hopes that this doesn't happen to others, I've made a flyer to raise awareness about the Death Caps.  I thank Lisa Wan for her incredible photos of the developmental stages of the Death Caps found in her backyard.  If you see them pick them and bag them. But as the ranger said....err on the side of caution... pick everything, bag it all and throw them out.

Please forward this email and flyer  to your friends who have kids and dogs.  Print out the flyer, post it at local pet shops, doggie day care, training facilities and veterinary hospitals.  Post it anywhere it will draw attention.  Feel free to copy this email and cross-post to yahoo email lists. Here is a link you can post so people can download the flyer.

Send and use this flyer anywhere it will bring awareness.  Let Donato help keep our loved ones safe.  Let his life help others.

The Amanita muscaria that I have seen in the NW have all been the yellowish coloration with the white dots.  I would discourage my pup from eating any fungus (perhaps with bitter apple).

I have lots of mushrooms that pop up this time of year and when I walk over them I can feel them give underground and dig them out and put them in a bucket & send them off in the garbage. I have Hannah's pup "Shway" at the house until she graduates from college on 12/11/10 and he is very oral. Hopefully I can keep him well fed and give him plenty of proper things to chew on and keep him in a safe environment. Thanks for the information. I remember my parents used to belong to a mushroom society in Seattle and they would have a survivor's convention at the end of every year. GO FIGURE!

Hi,
I like to remind people that my sweet Kara  (Holly's dam) died of mushroom poisoning (we were on public lands) she merely stepped in them and then cleared out her feet.
