About Makalapa Historic Homes
The Makalapa Historic Neighborhood is perhaps best known for being home to the Navy’s senior officers, particularly those in residence during World War II. On the morning of December 7, 1941 Admiral Kimmel stood in his front yard at his Makalapa home watching the attack on Pearl Harbor unfold before him. On December 25, 1941, Admiral Chester Nimitz moved into the neighborhood at 37 Makalapa Drive, which was his official residence throughout the war.
The Makalapa neighborhood is part of the Pearl Harbor Naval Complex and was built as military housing in the build-up to WWII. The hard hat tour will highlight the Makalapa Duplexes, which are historically significant as an example of Hawaii’s residential architecture during the 1940s. The duplexes represent the later work of one of Hawaii’s master architects, C.W. Dickey. The design is notable for the use of new materials and minimal ornamentation, with a traditional overall appearance. The significance of the duplexes also relates to the patterns of military rank, with the junior officers’ duplexes having notable differences in size and design elements from the officer housing. They are currently being renovated as part of the Navy’s housing privatization program.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope that you will be able to join us on this very special tour.
