Dear Parents/Guardians:

The safety of our children is always the highest priority at Cheatham
Elementary School and the Laveen Elementary School District. With that
in mind, we feel it is important to provide you with the following
information
about an incident that occurred yesterday. *It was reported that two
female students were walking home from school yesterday and were
allegedly followed by a man described as being an African American
adult male about 40 years old, 5'-10" in height, thin, dark
complexion, and short hair. The police were notified of the incident
and have investigated. The man was not found.

Please take the time to remind your children about the importance of
being cautious and aware, and what to do if
ever approached by a stranger. Here are some tips that you and your
children can follow to better ensure their
safety:

Walking to/From School - Students should never walk to and from school
alone; they should always travel
with at least one friend. Have your child take a specific route and
point out places along the route where he/
she could go to get help, if needed.

Stranger Danger - Instruct your children to never talk to strangers.
If a stranger approaches them, they should
follow the tip, "No, Go, Yell, Tell." If they're in a dangerous
situation, they should loudly shout "No!" run
away, yell as loud as they can, and immediately tell an adult. If they
have a cell phone, they should dial 911.

Students are also being reminded of these safety tips every day during
morning announcements at each school
for the remainder of the year. These safety tips are also included in
school newsletters. If you or your children ever notice any suspicious
individuals near any of the bus stops, schools, or in your
neighborhood, immediately call 911 or contact the Phoenix Police
Department at (602) 262-6151.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in helping to ensure the
safety of Laveen's children. If you
have any questions please call the school office at 602-237-7040.

Sincerely,
Mr. Michael Winters
Principal
