Dear Resident

Highbury Foundation identified a need for Internet Fibre optical cable in our areas.

Vumatel indicated that they were not considering the installation of fibre in our areas in the near future.

South African Digital Villages (SADV) indicated an eagerness to install fibre in our areas. We engaged SADV on several occasions. One of the requirements was an indication of the interest by households. The Highbury Foundation, at its own cost, undertook a door-to-door survey to gauge the interest. The number of households who expressed interest exceeded the minimum requirement.

At a public meeting, SADV provided information about fibre installation and answered questions from the public. They explained that the fibre cable installation process would follow the following process:

•             Application for wayleave approval

•             Trenching, cable installation and reinstatement by Mtelecoms

•             Connection to individual houses on application.

The rollout should have commenced by the beginning of March 2019. However, this was not done. Our calls to SADV went unanswered. The eventual response was that SADV had entered into an “install and take over” agreement with a sub-contractor but was not happy with their quality of work. Thus the fibre cable rollout project stalled. We then received a call from Mshebe Projects who expressed an interest to meet with Highbury Foundation on 15 May 2019.

Mshebe Projects and NETCUBE International introduced themselves and their working relationship. This joint venture between  Mshebe Projects and NETCUBE International is in the process of taking over the project and applying for a wayleave for the fibre cable installation. The personnel of NETCUBE International have many years of experience in fibre cable roll-out having subcontracted for big companies. They are now venturing out on their own to compete with the big roleplayers. The CEO of NETCUBE International is from our area and knows our communities. They wish to ensure community involvement in the project.

We feel that they deserve a chance and keenly await the next step. This industry is dominated by a few big plays (refer to the article here and here)

Dear Resident

The Highbury Foundation has now engaged with Mishbe/Netcube Int. joint venture who have taken over the proposed fibre optic rollout project in Highbury-Danarand.

We are now conducting this new survey. Attached is a copy of the survey form for your attention. Kindly print it out and hand in the completed form to the volunteer who will call at your house. This will expedite the process. Alternatively, you could drop off the completed form at the Internet Café, SHELL Garage in Highbury or email a scanned copy to theHighbury.fo...@gmail.com.

If you know of a young person who wishes to assist with the survey, kindly ask her/him to send an SMS to

Cell: 082-2224449

Volunteers meet at 17h30 on  Mondays to Fridays at the Highbury Primary School, Highbury Road (opposite Excelsior Park). Please bring your own pen. Volunteers wishing to work on a Saturday are welcome to do so.

The persons responsible for the internet optical Fiber roll out portfolio will report back at the next exec meeting.

Thereafter a  communique relating to the matter will be sent out

There are many who are anxious and can't wait to have access to optical fiber internet connections.

We await a program from the installers which we will share once we have received it

Please be assured that while there appears that not much is happening, there is quite a bit of activity in the background

We request that patients be exercised.

Also note the Highbury Foundation is a Civic organization comprising of an exec that provide their time and resources voluntary.
There Fiber rollout is only one of a few projects that are currently being receiving attention.

Please bear with us

So with SADV contractors agreeing to do the installation in highbury the question becomes when will this rollout occur.

Apparently the green light was given from the council to do the work contractors just has to pay over the deposit before they begin.

So if anyone can give us some proper feedback would be good

Ok So I have just heard back from the contractors doing the installation for Fiber in the Highbury Area.
They have stated that they have gotten the approval to proceed with the fiber rollout in Highbury.

This is GREAT news. now we just have to wait to see the first holes being dug. So from my lay of the land it seems the quickets way would be to create a new exchange at engine garage on stellenbosch aterial and then trench towards highbury road then move inwards.

So lets see when the first holes gets dug!

Good afternoon residents

I was very surprised today when I saw Vumatel people in their pink bibs surveying the streets of Highbury. I saw them in Lesperance Street.

My surprise stems from the fact that it seems as if our area is now suddenly regarded as financially viable, now that we have started to negotiate with suppliers to provide fibre optic installations.

We must voice our concern that Vumatel are all of a sudden involved after numerous occasions approaching them without them showing interest.

They must be excluded as a service provider.

Regards

Shaun
