Advanced Flood Model Training Announcement
HAZUS-MH is a powerful risk assessment tool developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for analyzing potential losses from floods, hurricane winds and earthquakes <http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/hazus/hz_eq.shtm> . In HAZUS-MH, current scientific and engineering knowledge is coupled with the latest geographic information systems (GIS) technology to produce estimates of hazard-related damage before, or after a disaster occurs. HAZUS-MH is available free of charge from FEMA. This course is designed to provide in-depth instruction on the use of HAZUS-MH for applications related to flood-loss modeling. HAZUS-MH has the capability to use either the vast collection of data that is provided with the tool or user provided data such as tax assessors files if more detailed analysis is desired. The flood model is capable of assessing losses from both riverine and coastal flooding. It estimates potential damage to many different classes of buildings, essential facilities, transportation and utility lifelines, vehicles, and agricultural crops. The model addresses building debris generation and shelter requirements. Direct losses are estimated based on physical damage to structures, contents, and building interiors. The effects of flood warning are taken into account, as are flow velocity effects. The results are displayed in a series of tables, reports, and maps.
Audience: State, local, and tribal emergency managers and GIS specialists, State and local planners, and other State and Federal agencies with risk assessment responsibilities. A working knowledge of ArcGIS is recommended.
