DER HASS AUF ROMA WÄCHST: HAT EUROPA NICHTS AUS SEINER GESCHICHTE GELERNT? / HATE ON THE RISE AGAINST ROMA : HAS EUROPE LEARNT FROM ITS HISTORY?

Katalin Barsony, Romedia Foundation Executive Director's article at Focus.de

"On 2nd August, the Roma will, as they have for years, commemorate the Pharrajimos - the slaying of around a quarter of the entire population at the time - during the Second World War. In Berlin, Roma from around the country will gather at the memorial to the Roma and Sinti murdered during the second World War, located opposite the Reichstag. There is a feeling amongst many Roma that their suffering has been airbrushed from history – an amenesia that makes Romani communities more vulnerable to discrimination and attack today.

Since 2015, negative views of Roma have increased in Germany, as it has in other countries, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. In fact, overall, attitudes toward Roma are more negative than attitudes toward Muslims, the study found. Among the 10 nations polled, negative views of Roma in their country since 2015 had gone up 6% to 40% in Germany. The memories of our grandparents reminds us of the dangers of this growth in hostility."
