Wolfgang Giere requested that I forward the following to Hardhats:

This is a contribution to the mailing list „hardhats“. Due to my age only a few readers still know me. For all others I shortly explain my connection to MUMPS:

In the late autumn 1972 IEEE had invited an international group of experts for IT (in those days still called EDP) in medicine to Dubrovnik to think about possibilities to help the third world. We could not fly home due to „Bora“. Instead, G. Octo Barnett on the airport explained to me MUMPS, his invention. He convinced me and we became friends. I was at that time director of the computer center of the Deutsche Klinik für Diagnostik in Wiesbaden.

In 1976 I became professor at the J.W.Goethe-University in Frankfurt/Main and founded a MUMPS Center. We translated FileMan Vs. 14 into German. Wolfgang Kirsten,  my deputy, taught MUMPS lessons and wrote several MUMPS textbooks.

We founded MUG Europe and MUG Germany. We hired from R.F. (Dick) Walters Steve Johnson, the inventor of Micro Mumps, finished and tested it, and made it available. Later Ichiro Wakai, MUG Japan, financed the development of GNOSIS, a blend of MUMPS and PROLOG for the so called „fifth generation computers“ in Japan, based on Micro MUMPS.

We promoted the foundation and were active members of the MUMPS Development Comittee (MDC). I became member and then chairman of the German board for the standardization of programming languages (DIN) and as such German Delegate at ISO, heavily involved in the standardization of MUMPS.

During my sabbatical at G.O.Barnetts laboratory of computer science I adapted his COSTAR query language for my BAIK system as „BAIK-Abfragesprache mit Integrierter Statistik (BASIS)“.

To convert William G. Moores translation program TRANSSOFT for English to German we faxed some thousand times and worked hard for the thesaurus. We used the program for the translation of G.Octo Barnetts Diagnosis program DXPLAIN.   (The thesaurus later became the nucleus of the „ICD-10 Diagnosen Thesaurus“ which nowadays is used by German speaking physicians in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It is maintained for the government by former students and staffmembers of mine.) Among my colleages I was known as „Mr. Mumps“.

Sorry, all named friends and colleages do not live any more. RIP!

(I will let Wolfgang know that Steve Johnson is still around, albeit retired. I expect to see him at an annual reunion picnic I organize - this year, it's at noon on Sun, Aug 11 at https://w3w.co/installing.assured.ladder; please do come if you are able to.)

Regards
