This is probably going to mean that open source VistA users are going to have
to use a commercial drug-drug interactions program or chose to use what is
available, thanks to Sam Habiel. Unfortunately, both the interaction database
in VistA and the open source database available from Canada are not Meaningful
Use compatible for a few reasons. However, for psychiatric hospitals, they
were adequate.
Initially psychiatric hospitals were chagrined that they would not receive
incentives to purchase EHRs when other hospitals were. I think now are
grateful because they do not need to use Meaningful Use Certified Software,
although you can be sure the vendors are hoping that will change. They can
use open source VistA with only minimal issues.
The Indian Health Service was using the VA drug-drug interactions which they
enhanced to satisfy Meaningful Use, but now they, too, are going to be
scrambling to replace this valuable resource.
