Spring is around the corner. Join this workshop to learn how seed starting gives your plants a head start. Otis Johnson, Bishop O'Dowds Farm Manager, has years of experience in farming. He'll share how successional seeds starting over the growing season can increase your crop productivity, companion planting options, and overall farm health.

Urban Ag in the Bay Area can be inspirational but also complex. To learn about opportunities and resources, join our roundtable discussion moderated by Julio Contreras, UCCE Community Education Specialist, and Colleen Hotchkiss, Alameda RCD Sustainable Agriculture Specialty. They will lead a discussion with local urban farmers and non-profit organization leaders.

Safe Soils

April 26th, 4pm-5:30pm

Learn about important safe soils consideration when starting a garden or if your site has a history of contamination. Rob Bennaton, Bay Area Urban Ag Advisor, will review how to manage your urban soils safely. This workshop will provide information on safe food growing in marginal soils, best practices in context of heavy-metal-safe-food-growing, soils sampling and understanding sampling results. The workshop will end with additional information on produce safety after recent floods and fires.

Carbon Farming

May 3rd, 4pm-5:30pm

This workshop teaches basic principles and applications for Carbon Farming in an Urban Farm setting. Jessica Bates, Alameda County Resource Conservation District, will review core basics of no-till growing & carbon farming for food production. You will also learn about polycultures for perennial and annual food production.

USDA Updates Farm Loan Program

A new change for current farm loan borrowers of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s farm loan program is intended to provide equitable relief to certain direct loan borrowers who got incorrect guidance by the Farm Service Agency. Previous updates authorized by the 2018 Farm Bill are also highlighted; including flexibility in three-year experience requirements and expanding the definition of and providing additional benefits to veteran farmers.
