Position Announcement

Job Title:    Program Coordinator

Salary:         $34,000 to $38,000, Full-Time Exempt

Reports To:   OBUGS Executive Director

Start Date:  July-August

 

 

OBUGS (Oakland Based Urban Gardens) is a 13-year-old nonprofit based in West Oakland. OBUGS’ mission is to build healthy communities through programs offered to children, youth and families in a network of school and neighborhood gardens, green spaces and farmers’ markets. OBUGS works with 700 children and youth during and after the school day offering hands-on education in science, nutrition, health, ecology, leadership, business skills, and more.

Major Responsibilities Include:

            Staff Management


·      Set and maintain high standards of professionalism

·      Develop and update job descriptions that meet program needs, work with Office Assistant to ensure that job announcements get posted to a wide range of applicant pools, screen resumes, interview potential candidates, and make hiring decisions in partnership with the E.D.

·      Work with Office Assistant to ensure that background checks and TB testing is complete for all new staff and volunteers

·      Provide orientation to new staff, offer on-the-job training, and conduct performance evaluations

·      Meet with staff regularly to ensure proper communication, completion of tasks and that safety procedures are being followed

·      Handle staff disciplinary actions swiftly and fairly

·      Monitor staff’s professional development needs and provide ongoing professional development activities for them

·      Oversee seasonal and periodic tasks, e.g. office cleanup, curriculum development, or overnight camping trip preparations

 

            Program Management


·      Ensure program priorities are adhered to: culturally appropriate foods, preparing & eating nutritious meals/snacks, harvesting and food distribution, age appropriate activities

·      Help staff find solutions to programmatic and coordination challenges

·      Maintain good relationships and coordinate with principals, teachers, after-school coordinators, OBUGS staff, and parents to create and carry out programs that meet the educational goals of the community

·      Create a class schedule for each semester that satisfies competing needs schools, staff, and the organization as whole within budgetary guidelines

·      Oversee the development and revision of curriculum that is age appropriate, addresses California Content Standards, meets the mission and goals of OBUGS, and is engaging and fun for all participants

·      Set behavior management procedures and ensure they are communicated to all staff and volunteers

·      Perform frequent site visits to ensure high program quality and that OBUGS’ programs are in compliance with our mission and our funding contractual requirements

·      Fill-in for absent staff to deliver In-school and Afterschool classes when a substitute is not available

·      Teach minimum of one class per week for an integrated approach to staff management and program oversight

·      Encourage integration of art, music, science, and physical activity (yoga, etc) into the garden classes' curriculum

 

            Volunteer Management

 

·      Ensure adequate trained volunteers are integral parts of all programs, specifically the In-school and Afterschool classes

·      Motivate, oversee and evaluate volunteers, keep a close relationship with the Volunteer Coordinator to communicate program and garden needs

·      Develop training programs for volunteers

·      Work with Program Leaders to develop and update volunteer schedules

·      Participate in volunteer appreciation efforts such as special events, etc


            Garden Management

 

·       Create and update a weekly to-do list of garden tasks for all OBUGS garden sites

·       Assist staff in planning how to teach and contribute to garden upkeep

·       Coordinate the purchasing, donation and distribution of plants, seeds, tools, compost, soil, etc. for each of the gardens

·       Coordinate and lead community gardening days and volunteer workdays

·       Assign urgent gardening needs to appropriate staff/volunteers

·       Follow-up with volunteers and Program Leaders to ensure gardening is completed

·       Meet regularly with lead garden volunteers

 

Other Tasks as Required Include:

 

·      Coordinate data collection as directed by the Executive Director

·      Provide regular programmatic updates to the Executive Director and assist with materials for  Board Meetings

·      Lead tours and assist with site visits

·      Facilitate Resource Center Meetings

·      Participate in outreach events, including tabling

·      And anything else E.D. or Board needs you to do; understand this job description is only  a guide and can be modified if situations dictate

 

Qualifications:

 

·      BA/BS degree preferred

·      At least 3 years experience with growing food required

·      At least 3 years experience teaching children preferred

·      Organized and able to lead multiple projects simultaneously while keeping on deadlines

·      Ability to solve problems independently, effectively, and creatively

·      Comfortable leading and motivating a diverse group of staff and volunteers

·      Experience in overseeing and implementing educational programs for a variety of age groups in a classroom and in a non-traditional setting

·      Availability to work weekends

·      Interest in child development, education, organic gardening, nutrition, ecology and understanding of current food security and environmental issues

·      Proficient use of word processing and spreadsheet applications

·      Familiarity with gmail, Google Calendar, Google Apps preferred

·      Comfortable with basic financials and adhering to budgetary requirements

·      Conversational Spanish preferred

·      Familiarity with Oakland, especially West Oakland required

·      Residence in Oakland preferred
