OBUGS 3rd ANNUAL ART & GARDEN TOUR
EXCLUSIVE GARDEN PREVIEW #1
Rounding the bend beyond this daffodil peace sign is the 1930 home Helen Wills Moody's father, Clarence Wills , a society physician from the Peninsula, built for himself in a then remote tract in the hills east of Berkeley. He described the place, designed by Lillian Bridgman, a student and friend of architect Bernard Maybeck, as a hunting lodge. In fact, he came here to live with his mistress.
When the current residents arrived in 1989, the place was much rundown and uninhabited, though it included a colorful history. Ask about the hoard of gold coins, the missing tax collector and, especially, the mistress' ghost....

GARDEN PREVIEW #1 Continued
Fully absent, though, was a developed landscape, and this has been a
central project of the last 21 years. There are two gardens surrounded
by 20 acres of native oak woods and grassy slopes. A long, sprawling
cactus and succulent installation spans the length of the house's
southeast elevation, and the newer palm garden, at a distance from the
house, was created with palms rescued from building sites, and recycled
building materials including statues cast in 1918, representing the
Humanities, which once adorned the San Francisco Main Library. Among
newer additions to the garden are the "fruiteries", screened pavilions
for a variety of espaliered and otherwise tortured fruit trees and roses
which were installed the summer Christopher Lloyd ripped his out to
make way for his exotic garden. The palm garden enjoys a prospect
towards the Las Trampas Range, a view framed by a 75 foot long curving
line of aloes, which, in Winter, offers an extraordinary profusion of
brilliant, red/orange flowers. Music and the memorable food creations of
Giovanna Tanzillo will excite your senses while you take in the
exclusive view.
