  OBUGS Summer Time Updates!

Picture 3.jpg

  Staff Changes & New Address

We want to update you on some big changes happening around here!

First we would like to thank our former Co-Executive Director, Emily Beggs, for her dedication and time with OBUGS. After finishing a fun filled Summer Camp of field trips, camping, and hands-on garden classes she has moved on to pursue new opportunities in graduate school to obtain her PHD.
While we will miss working with Emily tremendously, we are excited about the opportunities this new school year holds for OBUGS.

OBUGS has restructured to a model of Executive Director and Program Coordinator. Heather Davis, former Co-Executive Director, is now serving as the OBUGS Executive Director. Erin-Kate Escobar, former OBUGS Volunteer Coordinator and YOBUGS Leader, accepted the position of Program Coordinator and they are both already hard at work.

In addition to these changes in management and structure OUR OFFICE HAS MOVED SUITES! We have moved within the same building into Suite #1 from our six-year location at suite #5.

Our new address is:
1724 Mandela Parkway STE 1
Oakland, CA 94607

  Summertime Youth Interns: Eight is Great

We have 8 great summer interns working with us 40 hrs a week! They are lighting up the month of August and learning how to prepare healthy lunches and snacks though harvesting, grocery shopping, cooking, and meal planning on top of the many job skills the OBUGS office has to offer. Please welcome Anthony, Chanzell, Demaya, Dinesh, Jamikka, Kamisha, Ricardo, and Teresa!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN OBUGS YOUTH INTERN
Here is a recap on happenings from Anthony earlier this week...

"Today Erin-Kate and I went shopping for the ingredients we needed for lunch this week, the meals on the menu for the week were, Sandwiches with Smoothies today, Chicken and Vegetable soup for Wednesday, Parfaits and Salad on Thursday, and to top it of Chili on Friday. Working at O.B.U.G.S they encourage us to eat healthy as much as possible, one rule they have is “NO JUphoto.jpgNK FOOD”, me being a regular junk eater I thought I might find difficulty in following that rule, but Erin-Kate showed me different. She took me to Mandela Marketplace which is an organic marketplace and also where O.B.U.G.S. go to get there groceries that cant be picked or pulled out of the gardens we grow. When we first stepped foot in the tiny one room marketplace the aroma was overwhelming with smells that my senses have never been exposed too before. Organic products and produce line the shelve in a colorful array. This was my first time seeing an organic market, it gave me a feeling of comfort knowing my fruits and vegetables weren't sprayed with some pesticides. Erin-Kate and I quickly went to work on getting the items on our list, we started with the berries and dairy products we needed for our Smoothies and Parfaits, then we made our way to the assortment of vegetables for our soups and chili's, and got multiple nuts and beans out of the various selections of either or. No longer then what it took us to get there we were ready to pay for our food, Erin-Kate and I loaded up our bags (literally our bags we brought since we love our environment) and drove back. My co-workers and I got started on making lunch, Teresa and I made smoothies while Jamikka and Kamesha made the sandwiches [eggs were from our own OBUGS Chickens!], we ate briefer than the time it took us to make the food." - Anthony, OBUGS Youth Intern {PHOTO: OBUGS Youth Interns help MOHR 1 Housing Community Kids prepare healthy summer treats}
