Next Tuesday will be a major day of action for TJ in the Bay and around the country and we're asking TJWG to join us for one or both of the following actions:
Free MUNI for Youth Campaign Press Event and Action Join us (Sup. David Campos and other BoS members, SF Unified School District, POWER, Chinatown CDC and other CBOs) as we have our public launch of our campaign to win a Free 3 Year Pilot Transit Pass for SF Youth!
When: Tuesday September 20th from 12 - 12:30 Where: Steps of City Hall in San Francisco What: We'll hold a press event with youth, allies and elected officials highlighting the urgent need for equal access to schools, jobs, after-school programs followed by attending the SF MTA board meeting to show MUNI the broad support this campaign has
If you can attend please let me know. Also, because it's a school day (and we don't want to take kids out of the classroom) we'll have some youth who have recently graduated from school attending and some pre-school kids but it would great if we had more to show the media our future transit riders!
National Day of Action to Fight Federal Transit Cuts! Organized nationally by APTA (American Public Transit Association) allies from around the country will join UH, ACCE, ATU members, Genesis and TJWG members as we get out on the bus & the street asking transit riders to help us fight the Republican budget that would cut 30% of federal funds for transit service and devastate transit operators already under pressure to cut more service and increase fares:
When: Tuesday September 20th from 4 - 5pm Where: 14th & Broadway What: We'll be getting on the AC buses, handing out flyers and then doing a Call to Action on the following:
Congress just passed a short-term extension of the federal transportation bill but this is not enough - we demand:
- Tell Congress to pass a long term transportation bill that funds vital transit service, stops cuts and fare increase and protects and creates jobs
- Fight against House proposed budget that includes 30% cuts in transit funding that will devastate already strained public systems that have had to cut service (AC has already cut 15%) and raised fares since the recession began
- Support the President's American Jobs Act that includes $3 billion for transit funding with 10% of those funds flexible for much needed transit operations
- Support Congressman Russ Carnahan's Bill that would give local transit systems ability to flex 10% of federal funding for transit operations in difficult economic times
- We'll also ask riders to join ACCE for their local week of actions (week of September 26th) to hold banks accountable for their role in creating the economic conditions that have helped lead to transit service cuts and fare increases. Contact Claire of ACCE for more information.
After the on the bus action we'll be at 14th & Broadway at 4:45 taking out cell phones for a Call to Action (Calling our Congressional Representatives) and talking with press.
Please let us know if you can join! Thanks Bob & Lindsay
