Subject: Septima Clark's Guidance for Entreprneurship Training
Septima Clark was fired from her teaching job in South Carolina because she
refused to remain quiet about her active
membership in the NAACP. For Clark, it was a turning point that headed into
a lifetime campaign for social justice.
The year was 1956. Clark went on to co-found the Citizen Education Project,
one of the most important
developments in the Civil Rights Movement. Also known as the Citizenship
Schools, it helped disenfranchised African
Americans to read and write so they could qualify to vote under racist
southern Jim Crow laws.
For the first class, Clark selected Bernice Robinson as the instructor who
had no prior teaching experience. Robinson
was a beautician and dressmaker. What she brought; however, was an
understanding of how people under
segregation could be taught - even without previous education. After two
months of training, her fourteen students
were able to read the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.
Today, social and economic justice remain major issues for us as we face
greater financial collapses onto our social
service, health and education systems. We continue to have - and in some
cases, growing - populations of
disenfranchised urban residents without resources and avenues to resolve
their personal financial crisis.
We need direct intervention and information that will establish precedence
where people will be empowered to
make their own determinations without red tape, politicking and finances in
order to move forward. This is the goal
of Urban FIRE I. It may not be the solution for everything, but it is an
important step in getting us back on a
stronger economic foothold, individually and socially.
Our next session begins Saturday, September 19 from 9am to 12pm at the
Oakland Housing Authority, 935 Union
St. on the corner of 10th Street in West Oakland.
In Urban FIRE I we teach ethical business practices, personal development
and the growing body of work on the
Science of Success (SOS). We learn in teams, we teach through experiences
and dialogue, we leave no one behind
and we build a community. It is done in a way that students without prior
business experience will gain confidence in
understanding and thriving in their business venture. But it is more than
business training, Urban FIRE I is all about
training for a life worth living - in whatever the pursuit including the
dynamics of "intrapreneurship."
The training is powerful - and challenging - and yet constantly improving
and evolving so that we can provide the
best solutions for our students. More recently, the diversity of our
students has increased dramatically and with
excellent results for all students. With many corporations firing employees
in favor of outside services, we are seeing
more potential business owners than ever before, and yet we have few
programs to address this need. Urban FIRE is
one such solution.
Attached, you'll find a 2-page flyer providing a description of the program
as well as a schedule of classes during the
2009-10 school year. Please post this and/or pass it on to those you feel
would benefit from the training. Urban FIRE
is a joint venture between Urban VOICE and Oakland Adult and Career
Education.
