All NHN Member Organizations and Friends, I am pleased to invite you to an International Conference on Community-based Empowerment of Vulnerable Children to be held on 22nd and 23rd November, 2011 at Best Western, Murree Road, Islamabad (Pakistan). The governments and international donor agencies are trying to cope with the challenges of development since decades using one after other methods. The current development paradigm stresses on close interaction between international non-governmental organizations and their local partners to build resilience among communities for greater control over development process. Though new concepts of sustainable development are gaining ground in the civic engagement, yet the children are the most neglected part in this process. Mostly, people in our region do not have conceptual clarity around increasing child vulnerabilities resulting in physical and mental diseases and behavioral problems among our future generation. They are unaware what to focus and how to engage them in building sustainable future. In this scenario, a number of questions are yet to be addressed including but not limiting to: what is the current state of child rights, their development and protection? What are the best practices for child development and empowerment? And what may be the role of community in solving their problems? To address these questions and to create awareness, Helping Hand for Relief and Development is organizing an international conference to provide a platform to experts, professionals, institutions and organizations to come up with models, methods or new strategies on involving communities for solution of the problem. Prominent scholars from Pakistan and abroad (USA, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Turkey and Kenya) are participating in this conference. The conference will provide an opportunity to learn and meet with national and international professionals and researchers. Civil Society Organizations like yours can share their work through presentation of relevant models, sharing research work or by show-casing their work using stalls at the conference venue.
