Greetings Birders!

The Hartford Summer Bird Count (SBA) is now one week away.  Unlike my previous email, in which I mistakenly listed the Count as taking place on June 11-12 (Friday/Saturday), the actual count dates are June 12-13 (Saturday-Sunday).  Feel free to bird a little or a lot within the Count Circle, a 15 mile diameter circle, the center of which is located at the Old State House in downtown Hartford.  Our Count is divided into 12 areas.  Each area has a captain, and if you plan to participate in one of these areas, please contact the area captain for additional information.  We would like to make sure that we do not have multiple people going into the same areas and duplicating the bird counts.  We count all birds, seen or heard, during the weekend.  Here is a rundown on the 12 areas:

Area 1:  South Windsor (areas along the River including Station 43)
Captain:  Paul Desjardins    paul.des...@gmail.com
This the one area where multiple visits would be helpful as these marshland birds can be quite secretive.  Sought after species include least bittern, rails and marsh wrens among others.  Please contact Paul if you plan to bird in this area.

Area 2:  South Windsor upland areas
Captain:     Patrice Favreau  kestr...@gmail.com

Area 3:  Manchester
Captain:   Maggie Peretto   wing...@gmail.com

Area 4:   Glastonbury
Captain:   Andrew Dasinger     amdas...@gmail.com

Area 5:     Wethersfield/Rocky Hill
Captain:  Steve Kotchko     smk...@cox.net
The gates to the Rocky Hill and Wethersfield Meacows are now closed to vehicles.  Any birders who can bird by bicycle might contact the captain fopr additional instructions.

Area 6:  Hartford
Captain:   Jay Kaplan   jayb...@aol.com

Area 7:   Newington
Currently, there is no captain for this area.  If you plan to bird in Newington, please contact Jay Kaplan for additional information and a map of the Count circle.

Area 8:   Farmington/Avon
Currently, there is no captain for this area.  This is a small area on the western edge of our Count circle.  Please contact Jay Kaplan for a map of the Count circle if you plan to bird in this area.

Area 9:   West Hartford
Captain:  Brian Toal     bria...@sbcglobal.net
Although Brian plans to compile the results for Area 9 , he is unable to participate in this year's Count.  This is a large area dominated by the wooded West Hartford Reservoir lands.  This area holds warblers, vireos, tanagers and other woodland species.  We need birders to spend some serious time in the reservoir lands if we are to have an accurate tally of nesting species in the Hartford area.  We also need to confirm that someone will be responsible for looking for the cliff swallows that often nest on or near the Reservoir 6 power house.

Area 10:  Bloomfield
Captain:   Jim Watso     jcwp...@cox.net

Area 11:   Windsor
Captain:   MIke & Judy Whittlesey   mwhi...@gmail.com

Area 12:   East Hartford
Captain:  I have not yet confirmed a captain for this important area, but I am hopeful that long-time captain, Blair Wlochowski, will be able to captain this area.
Until such time, please send me your results if you plan to bird in this area.  East Hartford has a number of valuable areas including the Hockanum Linear Park and what is left of Rentschler Field among others.

I will provide updates as the Count draws closer.  Let me know if you have any questions.  This Count will be conducted in memory and in honor of Gil Kleiner, who was the long time captain for the Windsor area.

Good birding,

Jay Kaplan, Compiler
Hartford Summer Bird Count

Helen and I will cover the West Hartford MDC property.  If the power building is at the North end of Reservoir #6, then it's in Bloomfield.

Will you be birding north of the reservoir proper?  I enter the property from Juniper Rd. in Bloomfield at the Speer preserve which borders the reservoir, then into the back of the res near the trail going up Talcott Mt. This is north of the power building.
