Greetings Artesians,

Its official. The city announced today its intention to acquire
the Jefferson Street well through negotiation, or if that fails
eminent domain. I have up loaded the City press release to the files
section.
Next Tuesday, May 25th the council will consider a resolution to
acquire the well. If you can please come out to the council meeting to
speak in support of the resolution. Sign up for speaking to the
council begins at 6:30.
As fantastic as our victory is the next weeks and months will
be critical in shaping the design for the Jefferson Street well as
well as the future of the remaining wells downtown. We are on the cusp
of achieving our fundamental goal, municipal ownership, but the
struggle is far from over.
See you Tuesday. Laurian

That is such exciting news and please accept my heartfelt thanks to all those that have caused this to happen over the years.

Ok, that is the smiley faced response to the news...please allow me my curmudgeon face now and question what the long term plan of the city is for the well?

I do not believe for one minute that this is happening due to the altruistic flavor of the month city council. They are telling the world that they will get it by 'hook or crook', pardon the expression but I'm not a fan of imminent domain. So! Ok, they get it and everyone is happy...right? Wellllll maybe.

What happens in, oh lets say 5 years when the flat ground parking lot isn't enough. Does the next city council resind the agreement and start work on a high rise parking lot?

Develop that ground and there goes the well, lost, ruined, destroyed.

Ok, enough ground laying here for the topic. I say we MUST (by citizen imminent domain if possible) secure that well for perpetuity...not just those that are sucking air right now. We MUST DEMAND that we be shown what the city's plans are, if any, for that site.

IF, IF...we can not get that then I would urge that we call for a cessation to the vote UNTIL we can.

I understand that the call for how to proceed is to our board of directors so please consider this a 'fan-of-the-artesian-well' call to action on what I see as possibly nefarious activities of our benevolent council.

Thanks for reading.

Hi, Dave,

I think you have had a "Carnak" moment.  All is NOT well and good in the truest sense of intentions here.  We cannot do a citizen eminent domain.  I do not know of such a thing.  I wish you had a "bug" in all the homes of the council members.  That is the only way you will ever know what is up with them.  Could this be happening because some of the members were "caught" with unclean hands recently?  --Just an observation.  When is your next meeting?  I would make every effort to be there.  If the citizens don't get behind the surety of ownership of the well.  You could be very right about intentions gone south and future ignorance of a new council.

Thanks for writing your intuitions.  I think you are right!

Thank you Carolyn, I am allowed 3 mistakes a year and very few 'Carnak' moments :O)

Lest folks here think I have a grudge towards our new city council, please allow me to clarify. I think we have elected the very best city council we could have. I respect them all and honor them for their hard works on our behalf.

It is the ones coming in the future that I am throwing a scant eye at.

We need to firm up some wordage and intentions next Tuesday night...I think this will work out just right, there are more of us that love our Spring in downtown than there are that don't.

Oh and btw...lol ya I know 'citizen imminent domain' isn't real, I just liked the sound of it, kind of has a nice ring to it. Would be nice to turn tables at times.

Remember, any government powerful enough to give everything to you is just as capable of taking it all too. Apologies to the author of that quote...I horribly plagiarized it :O)

I am also very respectful, but I am at this point very skeptical of government.  You are right about rights.  Haven't they evolved over the years?  And they will in the future unless safeguards are written, and even then, they can be amended to death or changed  ooooh just so little.  One word can mean so much.  Carol
