On 17 December, five of us from the Steering Committee met with city
representatives whose areas of responsibility are involved with the
well. We agreed on the following as priorities for the development of
the area immediately around the well. This is my understanding, based
on notes from the meeting. Anyone else who was there, please feel
free to comment if your understanding was different :-)
The Over-riding Priority -- free flowing water
General Guidelines
-- Do work in stages
-- Confine building to the surface
-- Clean up and beautify the area
Most Important Features (not necessarily in this order)
– a bench or platform for well-users to set containers on, above the
ground level
– security lighting
– a hard smooth surface (possibly recycled bricks from old paving)
that will provide all-around access (not just a ramp) for wheelchairs,
bicycles, etc, and will not present a tripping hazard
– protection for the outflow pipe – some sort of plinths or large
heavy planters
– some way of guiding the runoff into a drain that will not allow
formation of an ice-slick in cold weather
– a way of visually setting the well area off from the surrounding
parking lot
– a notice or announcement board, for posting information about the
well
Would Be Nice
-- a lightweight shelter
-- historic marker
-- something to soften the harshness of asphalt and black wall
Long Term -- open up other well locations
