TNN | May 18, 2012, 02.45AM ISTAHMEDABAD: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted an additional 720 engineering seats in the existing colleges which will be available for admissions this year. In all, the number of engineering seats has increased by 6,060.
Of these, 5278 seats have been granted in new colleges which have been given approval by the AICTE. The granting of new seats has taken the total number of seats available for admission to students who have cleared HSC (science) this year to 50,423.
On May 22, the AICTE is likely to approve more seats when it undertakes the process of granting additional seats in existing colleges and giving approval to new colleges.
In Gujarat, there are 110 engineering colleges of which 85 are self-financed. "This increase in seats is the first phase. In the second phase, we expect that the AICTE will grant more seats which will further increase the number of seats available for students in self-financed colleges," said officials of the Admission Committee for Professional Courses.
Though, this increase in seats could turn out to be a bad news for self-financed colleges. "Last year, more than 5,500 seats remained vacant in engineering colleges owing to want of students. This year, though more number of students have passed the exam, the number of students seeking a course in engineering is likely to be far less than the seats available. There is a strong possibility that more than 12,000 seats are going to remain vacant," said ACPC officials. tnn
