GUERRILLA GAY BAR COMMUNIQUE No. 48Greetings, Guerrillas,
We promised this month's event is like nothing we'd ever done before, and we weren't kidding.
This Sunday night, November 2, at 7 PM, with your help,
we're going to organize our straight friends to take over the bane of GGB's existence:
THE ABBEY692 N. Robertson Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA 90069
Map:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=692+N+Robertson+Blvd,+west+hollywood,+ca+90069
(...and the first person who emails to quip that straight people have already taken over the Abbey is getting kicked out of the revolution!)
Do we even need to describe the Abbey? It's big. It's beautiful. It's been expanded five times in the past twelve years and is expected to take over West Hollywood completely by the year 2012. And for one night only, we're going to fill it with
interesting people!!
WAIT, WHAT??We
can't defeat prop 8 by ourselves, comrades. We need lots of allies in order to win. We're betting that every person on our list knows a few sympathetic straight people.
So, we're asking you to
find two straight people - folks who you suspect will vote no on prop 8 on Tuesday, but preferably with whom you haven't yet discussed it -- and
bring them with you to help us crash West Hollywood's gay mecca, the Abbey. The goal here is to fill the Abbey with straight people who are planning to vote no on 8. Buy them a drink and, at some point in the evening, talk to them about Prop 8, and why it's important to you. We'll give them black armbands. It's their takeover, after all -- and our very first (and only) Guerrilla Straight Bar!
DRESS CODEIf you're gay, dress like marriage material. For your straight friends, we'll provide the armbands.
WHAT IF THE ABBEY IS FULL?GGB organizers will be passing out black armbands in line -- so, if the line is too long when you arrive, wait for us to bring your friends an armband, then head up the street to one of the many other bars on the Santa Monica strip, (Fiesta Cantina, perhaps?) and come back to the Abbey a little bit later.
I DON'T KNOW ANY STRAIGHT PEOPLEOh, for crying out loud, you do too. Bring your co-workers, the girl or boy you took to prom, your mom, your dad, your sister, brother, coworkers, aunt and uncle. If you can't find two straight people of your own to bring, come anyway, find someone with a black armband and buy them a drink!
THE GOALWe'll consider this event a success if we:
-
thank some of our straight allies who will be voting no on 8
-
confront a civil rights issue head-on by doing what we do best: filling a space with a different-than-usual crowd, and making it a party
- finally convince some lesbians to come to Guerrilla Gay Bar
-
give everyone, straight and gay, a good story (and
a reason to talk about no-on-prop 8 around the water cooler on Monday morning)
VOTER REGISTRATION
We love it when you RSVP! You'll get our vote if you tell us you're coming at
