We are forced to innovate new lifestyles, activities, and works, nowaday. When we innovate we cannot help but go through testing. Actually, every production work serves as a test for the following steps of improvements.

We went through the test-based and test-oriented school education in Taiwan. Under that system, those who failed the tests would not enjoy life, not even normal life. I still remember the first day I went into the classroom when I repeated my 11th grade and the month after I failed to graduate from high school.

Working in the aircraft manufacturing industry I found the joy of giving thorough tests and delivering bug-free software to support special military missions. Working as a college instructor I enjoyed the innovation of tests that prevented and eliminated the attempts to cheat in tests. Tests and testing have become experiences of
mixed feeling.

The fun part is that "failing the tests" has become the most effective and efficient process of learning. Perhaps that is why many stories of failure fill the Bible. The funnier part is that God always called and gave critical missions to those who failed before. Is there any person who has never failed before?

Is this part of the critical lessons to learn in our stage of pastoral-searching?

We will be tested continuously, I guess. The tests might be spontaneous and natural without any ill-intention. There will also be tests that are intended to bring us down by some unknown force or camps. At the same time, we will continue to test others and make decisions that depend on the results of the tests.

The arts of listening and following Christian sermons include the extended comprehension and the related actions that reflect our understanding of the sermon. The sermons are not supposed to be just some intellectual teaching and learning even though the effects of teaching and learning are involved heavily.

One of the levels of learning challenging us is "do I have the skills to pass the messages to others?", "Are there better ways for me to pass the messages and my lessons learned to others?" This is one of the reasons that participating in the translation ministry is important and beneficial.

We will get to know the #630 of our hymnal. This is a Taiwanese version of a new hymn written in our era, 1985. It challenges us to make the singing part of the ritual of worship service, theological learning, or relief of our tension or doubts. It might be all of these at the same time none of these.

The lyrics are very poetic with ambiguity and perhaps inaccuracy of expression in words. The original melody sounds quite affirmative while the Taiwanese melody implies uncertainty. It is an art at very high level of execution and appreciation.

The poems are supposed to transmit and incur feelings and sensations rather than transmitting "knowledge" or displaying intelligence.
