Environmental Intern (35 Hour)

Bureau of Materials Management and Compliance Assurance (MMCA)

The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is currently seeking to fill multiple vacancies as an

 Environmental Intern within the Bureau of Materials Management & Compliance Assurance (MMCA) in Hartford, CT.  

Position Highlights:

The immediate vacancies are within the following MMCA Divisions: 

  • The Water Permitting and Enforcement Division - The Environmental Intern will be responsible for assisting with inspection, enforcement and permitting programs within the Division, which pertain to industrial, agricultural, domestic and stormwater discharges to surface water, groundwater and the sanitary sewer. 
  • The Emergency Response and Spill Prevention Division - The Environmental Intern will primarily focus on compliance assistance to the regulated community and enforcement related activities, including but not limited to, working with senior staff to issue, track, manage and resolve informal and formal enforcement actions, identifying violations of applicable Connecticut law, witnessing permanent closure of tank systems, and conducting electronic Underground Storage Tank (UST) compliance inspections to determine compliance with regulatory requirements and related activities. 
  • The Waste Engineering and Enforcement Division Enforcement Program - The Environmental Intern will primarily focus on compliance assistance to the regulated community and enforcement related activities, including but not limited to, working with senior staff to issue, track, manage and resolve informal and formal enforcement actions, identifying violations of applicable Connecticut laws, and performing site/facility inspections. 
  • The Emergency Response and Spill Prevention Division Corrective Action Unit - The Environmental Intern will primarily focus on assisting in the review and approval of actions taken pursuant to formal and informal enforcement actions and spill responses, assisting in the review of investigation and cleanup plans, assisting in the review of fields investigations and tracking compliance to fulfill state cleanup compliance and federal PCB and UST grant reporting requirements. 

These positions will receive training under the direction of a supervisor or senior staff for a period of one year. Promotion to Environmental Analyst 1 will occur after successful completion of the training program.
