DWC  is about the best way...or a suspended NFT.  Onions like a higher than usual N level and do very !! well in hydro. Just make sure that only your onion roots make contact with the nutes.

Im a PH based hydro guy.  Pretty well  General Hydroponic nutes only.
For mature plants I use a general formula of  8ml of  Micro per res gallon and 16ml of Bloom.  I dont use  Grow,  its been long proven that healthy plants do not need it.

For onions Id start the res around 5.4...let it drift up to around 6.4/6.5  and then settle around 5.8.

You will sure cut your crop time with hydro too.

Would perlite work better than clay for onions?

Hi George,
grown spring onions on a commercial scale using a coco fiber.
need to watch the powdery mildew, depending on the size of the system (home garden size) a retail nutrient should work well.

if you are doing 40,000 plants i would suggest 12000L tank set the level at about 8,0000 L
water test and formulate the nutrient to suit. retest after 2 weeks then reformulate a base solution. based on the element level usage over the 2 weeks.
the first crop will require regular testing 2 week then 4 week  (depending on water quality).
