In this course, Angela Vincent will:

  • Demystify the Legislative Process

  • Explore Policy Tools for SRM including Bans, EPR, Ordinances, Taxes, and Incentives

  • Clarify the role of various stakeholders, including CalRecycle, the California EPA, local municipalities, haulers and recyclers, and waste generators

  • Cover the basics of current SRM laws: SB 5, AB 939, AB32, SB 2020, AB 341, SB 1383 and more

  • Explain the new bills SB 343, AB 881, AB 1281

  • Answer questions and provide resources for policy analysis and compliance assistance

 

California has been a leader in developing effective waste and recycling policies since the landmark AB 939 in 1989 that required jurisdictions to divert 50 percent of their waste from landfill. Fast forward over three decades later, our state stands at a 37 percent recycling rate. In this course, you will learn about the history of waste and recycling laws in California, identify key recycling challenges we face today, and explore various policy tools to achieve zero waste. The legislative process will be demystified as you learn about the various stakeholders and catalysts for change.
