Invitation from BYO network: Join Us April 7 - Guest Speaker Rebecca Burgess of Fibershed

Next BYO gathering: Rebecca Burgess on Fibershed, textiles, and local systems

Dear BYO Movers,

Upcoming Gathering on 4/7

BYO-US Reduces, a national grassroots network of bring-your-own enthusiasts, is excited to invite you to our next online BYO gathering on Monday, April 7, featuring Rebecca Burgess, founder and executive director of Fibershed and author of Harvesting Color and Fibershed: Growing a Movement of Farmers. Her work is at the intersection of ecology, fiber systems, and regional economic development.

Rebecca’s work is a great fit for our gathering. In BYO, we often talk about reducing plastic and rebuilding more local systems for everyday life. Fibershed brings that same conversation into the world of clothing, textiles, land, and regional production. And yes, maybe some of us are also a little tired of seeing thicker plastic bags marketed as “reusable.”

A Fibershed collaborator, Lydia Wendt, is featured in the new Netflix film Plastic Detox. Recently released on Netflix, the film follows the plastics industry from extraction and material production to the many ways plastic ends up in the products we use every day. It also makes a compelling case for why the materials we choose matter deeply. Lydia developed the textile for the Backyard Hoodie project, a piece featured in the film. She also designed and created 100% cotton garments dyed with medicinal elderberry for the Soil to Soil showcase.

This 20-minute video on fast fashion from More Perfect Union is also a great way to start thinking about textiles before our meeting with Rebecca.

BYO - US Reduces started these bimonthly online gatherings because local grassroots organizing can be sometimes hard, especially without institutional backing, and people need places to come together, exchange ideas, and encourage each other. We want this to be a relaxed but meaningful space where BYO organizers and supporters can hear from inspiring speakers, connect with others doing the work, and leave with renewed energy.

On that note, our gatherings usually conclude with a Q&A and our Small Breakout Socials—great spaces to connect and exchange ideas across BYO programs and to share your latest everyday zero-waste hacks and discoveries.

Please register here now and put it on your calendar.

We have an exciting speakers lined up for June, August and October as well. Please join the 4/7 gathering to find out who they are.
