I have traveled around our part of town quite a bit over the past few
days. As in the past, many of us are experiencing flooding in yards
and streets. Last year it was really heavy along Washington St. and in
a large part of the western side of the district, especially in the
areas near Annunciation Church and West High.
I've talked with several residents and the mayor about this ongoing
problem. I also gave my friend Ceci Kiefer a call. She runs Stone Silo
Prairie Gardens in De Pere. She'd be willing to put on a presentation
about rain gardening. Rain gardens can mitigate flooding, provide
beautification, and improve biodiversity of birds and pollinators.
I'll send out one more message once we pin down a date and time. If
you'd like to learn more, these are a couple useful sites:
http://dnr.wi.gov/runoff/rg/ and http://www.stonesiloprairie.com/.
In the meantime, if you have flood-related questions or concerns,
please call the city's Department of Public Works at 448-3100.
Take care,
Ned Dorff
