All:

This is not intended to crucify anyone on the very incident that took place during last Saturday's ride where "John Doe" spit/blew their nose and unfortunately it went flying full onto my face being right behind them where there were 10 or so more riders behind me. Thank goodness I had my sunglasses on but a full-face helmet would've been much more warranted in this case... Rather, I would like to use this opportunity to thank all ride leaders for leading rides and rider leader Richard Hughes on that ride who reached out and mediated this whole matter, and conveyed the apology from "John Doe" to me. I'd also like to have this email serve as a reminder of the below points right on the header of the sign-up for any GEARs group ride so no one would have to endure what I had to ever again on mostly welcoming and pleasant rides GEARs provide! Thank you!

GEARs Multi-Use Shared Path Etiquette

The City of Eugene seeks to promote safety and courtesy among all shared path users, practices that GEARs embraces. On all bike paths, cyclists should give warnings to pedestrians and other cyclists when passing, ride single file, and to ride at a safe speed (recommended 12 mph when others are present).

Ride behavior:

  • No spitting or “snot rockets” around others.
  • If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms you should not join the ride: fever, problems breathing, coughing.
  • If you have been in contact with anyone experiencing those symptoms or who has been diagnosed positive for COVID-19 you should not join the ride.
