GEARs Community,
I want to personally ask you to attend the Transportation Safety Community Forum on Thursday, February 12, from 6–8 pm at Roosevelt Middle School. If you ride a bike in Eugene, this issue is not abstract. In the last six months, three cyclist in our city were killed by people driving. They were riding on the same kinds of streets we use every day. This could have been any one of us.
As members of GEARs, we care deeply about riding safely, whether commuting, riding with family, or heading out for exercise. But individual awareness isn’t enough when street design and policy continue to put people at risk. Change happens when the people show up and speak out.
This forum is a chance for cyclists to: Voice concerns and hopes around how we travel around. Preview a range of possible solutions with UO Professor of City & Regional Planning Marc Schlossberg. Hear responses from Eugene Mayor Kaarin Knudson, County Commissioner Laurie Trieger, and other officials. Learn about next steps and opportunities for getting involved in lasting change.
Please RSVP if you can attend, or sign up to stay informed if you can’t. I really hope to see a strong GEARs turnout.
Hope to see some familiar faces,
Kayna Robison, President

In the last six months, people driving and dangerous streets killed three people bicycling in Eugene: Elizabeth Cardenas Figueroa, Merle Dean Sheffield, and Erick Munene Njue. Despite Vision Zero efforts to eliminate fatalities and life-changing injuries, Eugene is seeing the total number of traffic deaths increase, mirroring experiences across the country. Now community members and local organizations are coming together to envision and push for a safer and better transportation system for everyone. The community forum on February 12 is one of the first steps in this journey. Voice concerns and hopes around how we travel around.
