Saturday, June 6th, what a great day for a GEARs Ride! Deven showed up to lead her 16+ Riders out. Karen showed up to lead her 10 to 12 mph Riders. And I showed up to lead my 12 to 14 mph Riders. We were all ready and looking forward to the journey.
It was a nice morning to start a Ride, and we were all anticipating getting our respective Rides completed before a drop of water fell on us. My Group and I briefly discussed the potential but immediately sought denial (it can be a better place!) and we rode away on a modified route out to Earnest Covered Bridge.
Karen’s and Deven’s Group were headed over McKenzie View – Karen’s to the Mohawk Store and Deven’s further out to Wendling Bridge.
My Group took the EWEB Pathway and stayed flatter, only to find rain shortly after turning onto Hill Rd.
Don’t quote me, but I heard that Karen’s Group missed almost all of the rain. And while Deven’s Group rode in the rain on McKenzie View, they were Riding fast enough that even though the rain was coming down where they were the rain never touched them! How does that happen?
Well, it was a different story for me and my Riders – the rain came down and we felt it. I pulled over and donned my trusty rain jacket while the rest of my Group kept their pace, doing their best to outrun the clouds.
I have to tell you, once I got my rain jacket on and neared Hill Road, I spotted the 16+ Group stopped at McKenzie View. They were all looking in my direction.
My heart was touched.
Surely, they were waiting to cheer me on as I heroically chased down my Group through the rain.
What an honor!
Unfortunately, before I got within 50 yards of them, my feeling of warmth was quickly shattered as they all moved out and rolled onto Hill Rd, pulling away before I could close the gap. Their sweeper glanced back—perhaps to make sure I wasn't about to pass him—and I could have sworn I heard laughter drifting through the damp morning air – they knew I had lock, stock and barrel bought into their little scheme!
In reality, they probably had no idea what was going on inside my head and beyond. My imagination seems to take me places nowadays that those illegal substances (that I never partook never could. They also knew that I could handle the setback…they’ve trained me well…….LOL.
I will tell you, that my disappointment could not last long – as it was just great to be on my bicycle, Riding in the rain with a rain jacket and it’s 55 degrees out. Riding towards some great fellow Riders, on a great route – it does not get much better than that!
Kudos to Karen and Deven for leading yesterday. As well as to all our Ride Leaders who take the time for us to soar on our bikes and take our imaginations with us!
And thanks to Kentucky Bob for Coordinating all of our GEARs Rides. To Mike Cantrell who manages to get the Rides listed and Signup Genius ready for us. And also now to Sam McCament who is successfully building our “Overnight & Tours” page.
We could not be able to do this without all of you!
I hope all of you let your imaginations run a bit while you are riding – just make sure you are paying attention.
GEARs is a Great Little Bike Club!
Peace,
Larry
