SUNSET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

GREAT ADVENTURES - REBEL HIKES

2012 SEASON

We are back for another season of rebel hikes hosted by Howard Hansen from Sunset Presbyterian Church. Howard has a full line up for the 2012 season kicking off with the ultimate Portland excursion, the Portland 4T: Trail, Tram, Trolley and Train - Saturday April 7.  Howard is a former Mazama climb leader with international experience in hiking and climbing.  Contact Howard if you are interested in this hike or if you have questions (see contact at the bottom).

Rebel hikes provide an opportunity for hikers to improve their conditioning, learn about what to wear, and become better acquainted with those of similar inclinations.  Plus, the views are spectacular.  The list of overnight backpacking trips for the season will be published later in the spring.

HIKE ONE – PORTLAND 4T: Trail, Tram, Trolley and Train

The ultimate Portland excursion

Saturday APRIL 7, 2012

Meet on the west side of SPC parking lot at 9:00 am for carpooling to the MAX Elmonica Station.  Purchase an all-day Tri-Met pass for $5.  We will ride together to the Oregon Zoo station, leave MAX, walk past the Zoo entry, cross HWY 26 on the bridge and start up Marquam Trail.

Trail – Marquam Trail to Council Crest and descend to OHSU (approximately 4.5 miles)

Tram – Free going downhill to South Waterfront District

Trolley – Travel from South Waterfront District to 10th and Yamhill

Train – Take MAX back to Elmonica Station

I’ll bet we can find a restaurant for lunch along the way.

Prepare for each hike by bringing a daypack large enough to carry clothing layers (NOT COTTON) appropriate for Oregon weather (cold/rain/wind), hat or cap, lunch/snack for along the trail, at least one liter of water or your favorite sports drink, and wearing comfortable, broken-in lug sole trail boots.  Optional equipment would be trekking poles, packable umbrella, pack cover, etc.  Please don’t bring pets.

While we encourage carpooling, you are welcome to travel on your own if you prefer.  It is customary to contribute toward the driver’s fuel expense.
