Friends,

I have uploaded this file [VT Grass Pellet Feasibility Study 2010.pdf]
to the files section of this group.

Adam Sheman writes: "We have finished the report detailing the
findings of our grass pellet combustion work at All Souls Gathering."

Note: Google is changing the way Groups work and files must now be
loaded in Google Docs.

Cheers,

Jock

Has it occurred to anyone that your 16 VT airports have lots of open
grassland that is being mowed as a maintenance expense? I am sure that
the FAA has some rules about how tall any vegetation can be and maybe
they would need to be reseeded. But that might turn an expense into a
cash positive for the airport operators if grass pellets work out.

Jock, Thank you for distributing this study. I am new to this group.   CellTech  has developed a very different type of fuel cell called the Liquid Tin Anode Fuel Cell that can operate directly on solid fuel without gasification. This is NOT a hydrogen fuel cell, even though it can operate on hydrogen. This class of fuel cell is sometimes referred to as a Direct Carbon Fuel Cell. The advantages of our fuel cell are 1) simplicity -solids are directly fed into the fuel cell and 2) efficiency - up to double the efficiency of power generation using conventional technology.

CellTech is now building small brassboard systems for military applications and conducting solid fuel (biomass and coal) feasibility studies for DOE and NSF.   We recently conducted successful tests of switchgrass and other biomass feedstock.  In particular,  the issues of sulfur and ash fusion, which the report highlights as critical to combustion applications,  do not appear to be as problematic in our fuel cell.

We are interested in developing partnerships to further develop our technology in conjunction with equipment manufacturers, fuel suppliers and end users.

If anyone is interested in more information please contact me at   jben...@celltechpower.com

CellTech is located in Westborough MA.

Hi, all. I had a similar problem -- Google docs wasn't able to open the doc. But if you go to the Google Groups site (grass energy), the file is available there as a pdf. (And, yes, thanks very much for posting this report.)

Hi All,
I did read the report, thank you Guillermo, and there are some statements that need revising. Otherwise, the report looks pretty.

My testing showed that some existing movable grate room heaters set up for corn will also burn switchgrass pellets of the PFI specification with absolutely no fusing over days at a time with no human intervention. I had been advised by one room heater manufacturer that their proprietary stainless stack needed an internal coating to last more than several years, due to pitting. I can only confirm that after several years and only a few tons of material, there is no pitting in their coated stainless stack. Stainless steel by itself is vulnerable to Chlorine. The report anticipates that stainless stacks would work without comment.
I saw nothing in the report about the shift in carbon concentration balance at the lower root levels (sub-5 feet) of switchgrass plots after several decades of cropping. Although this is a Vermont study, the conclusions and next steps might reflect a concern voiced by at least one farmer in Vermont about the depletion of deep carbon that, with wood agriculture is not required as it is for grass. At least this should be a question if sustainable solutions are of interest rather than 50 year transitional solutions.

This is a great piece of work and provides some very good an important
findings. We have experienced many of the same results and no doubt
this will certainly help us with our project. Many thanks for this
study.
