POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
TEACHER EDUCATION (Birth to Grade 6) DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION COLLEGE
OF EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SERVICES UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT (UVM),
BURLINGTON, VT 05405
The College of Education and Social Services at the University of
Vermont seeks to create a more humane and socially just society, free
from oppression, which fosters respect for ethnic and cultural
diversity and makes a difference in lives of individuals, families,
and communities. Within this context, the Department of Education
seeks a faculty member to join our dynamic and growing Teacher
Education Programs. Included are NCATE accredited Early Childhood
PreK-3 Education, Early Childhood Special Education, and Elementary
Education Programs. The Early Childhood Program also operates the lab
school, the UVM Campus Children’s Center. This is a full-time, nine-
month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Established in 1791, the University of Vermont is a major research
university located in the state's largest city- Burlington-the nations
"#1 Smallest Big City" and ranked #1 "for outside activities, arts and
entertainment, safety, and overall quality of life." We enjoy a
progressive economy, excellent school systems, a dynamic and
stimulating cultural scene, and a vibrant and diverse social life. UVM
overlooks beautiful Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains and is
30 minutes from major ski areas, 1.5 hours from Montréal, and 3.5
hours from Boston.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Vermont recently identified three
"Spires of Excellence" in which it will strategically focus
institutional investments and growth over the next several years.
These include Neuroscience, Behavior and Health; Complex Systems; and
Food Systems. Candidates whose research, scholarship, and/or creative
work interests align with the Neuroscience, Behavior, and Health spire

The successful candidate will have a vision for teacher education in
the 21st century, a commitment to collaborating with others to support
a dynamic teacher education program and a vibrant research agenda.
Preferences will be given to candidates with an interest in
developmental neuroscience and education related to Early Childhood,
Elementary, and/or Special Education. The position includes teaching
and advising graduate and undergraduate students and committee service
responsibilities. Research productivity is essential as well as
service and outreach activities.
QUALIFICATIONS: (1) an earned doctorate with a focus in Early
Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education and/or
Elementary Education; (2)
an established area of scholarship related to developmental
neuroscience; (3) a commitment to, and experience working with diverse
learners (birth to grade 6) and their families; (4) successful
teaching experience in early childhood and/or elementary education;
and (5) demonstrated commitment to diversity.
EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT: September, 2011.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: Review of applications will begin December
15, 2010 and continue until a suitable candidate has been identified.
Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Education or a closely
related discipline and have a high degree of familiarity with and
experiences in child- centered approaches to early education through
grade 6, preferably from a “social constructivist” perspective.
Responsibilities may include teaching undergraduate and graduate
curriculum courses, supervising student teaching placements, advising,
and pursuing a sustained program of scholarship leading to academic
tenure and promotion. We are particularly interested in receiving
applications from those interested in the dynamic relationship between
the developing brain of the young child and pedagogy (birth to grade
6). A preference will be given to applicants with a research interest
in developmental neuroscience related to intervention and education.

contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community
through their research, teaching, and/or service. Applicants are
