popup without marker

hello
i am building a map on my site of a group of small islands over a
large geographic area. the islands are merely dots on the map due to
the zoom level. having a marker over each island would essentially
hide the island.
is it possible then to have a tinier marker (a dot would be nice), or
more ideal, use text links outside the map which zoom and open a popup
without a marker?
