Error when Vista wakes from sleep mode

Sporadically, when Vista (Home Premium SP1) wakes from sleep mode, I
get the error "Volume Control may be busy, or it may have stopped
responding. Do you want to abort and remove the gadget now, or
continue to see if it will respond?"

I then have the choice of Remove Gadget or Continue.

I am running Google Desktop 5.8.0809.23506-en-pb.

Any ideas how I can prevent this?
