I just read in Block Club Chicago that Nichols Park is a location for “unofficial” fireworks on July 4th. This is most concerning considering the small size of the park and the densely populated surrounding residential area.  Has anyone else heard about this or know who is behind the initiative?

I'm extremely disappointed in Block Club for promoting illegal home fireworks. As seen by the car that blew up and burned in the Point parking lot last week, amateurs don't know what they are doing. Gathering an even larger crowd both encourages the "performers" to go bigger and may endanger the crowd if something goes literally sideways.

Malia & Trish, Whomever had the cockamamie idea that Nichols Park would be a good location for fireworks on the 4th is flat out nuts.  That’s a really dangerous suggestion and I hope it won’t happen. The Nichols Park Advisory Council is vehemently opposed to the idea, and absolutely condemns the idea, as Secretary Dave White will confirm. Please stick to sparklers and other less hazardous ways to celebrate! Steph🐈

It's not an initiative; it's a recognition of the fact that in past years, people have set off fireworks at Nichols, so it's likely they will again. In other words, there's no coordinated effort with a specific person or group behind it -- the article is listing places where this tends to happen.

And when and if it happens, I (as a close neighbor) for one, call the police. Some of those rockets etc. are extremely hazardous, and can set fire to any roof they happen to land on. Or any car, or any other space. A really bad idea. 🐈

Hi neighbors. Those wishing to voice concerns about Block Club Chicago listing Nichols Park as an unofficial fireworks location can email the reporter and newsroom:

Kelly Bauer (reporter) - ke...@blockclubchi.org

Newsroom - News...@BlockClubChi.org

I am sending a note to both email addresses this morning.

I think they removed Nichols Park but it's probably worth suggesting that promoting ANY "unofficial" 4th of July fireworks is a bad idea. I knew a teenager who got his hand blown off setting amateur fireworks.

The article says it was updated 1 hour ago, so they took it out after the complaints.

BUT they still don't see why advertising people to gather for illegal/amateur fireworks is a bad idea. Building an audience just encourages the amateurs to go bigger and they don't need the encouragement.

I'd add as an aside that I always thought the big fireworks were going off in Harold Washington Park. Those go up as high as the 14 story buildings and explode. These are dangerous. It's not Roman Candles and sparklers.

You are correct, Wendy.  Now the list is shorter, and one of the removals was Nichols Park on 53rd St.!!!!!

This is a reminder .... if we can't find our little dog's thunder shirt by tomorrow morning, I'm going to shoot down to Pets Mart to get a new one!
That said, I hope to see as many of you as possible at the 4th on 53rd Parade and Festival in Nichols Park.

It's still not too late to volunteer. You can sign up here:  https://4thon53rdparade.com/volunteer-1

Hello. I emailed the reporter this morning with a request to correct/delete.

She responded that she would remove Nichols Park from the list. Glad to hear she did so in a timely manner.
