Various definitions exist as to the Great Work. Some claim union with
Godhead, others say returning to native state of Godhood.
I've read most of Regardies books, and some by mthers, Waite, Wycott
and so on. What's the general opinion of which definition is closer to
the Truth of the Work?

I see this as two ways of saying the same thing.

"I will, from this day forward apply myself to the Great Work - which
is, to purify and exalt my Spiritual Nature so that with the Divine Aid
I may at length attain to be more than human, and thus gradually raise
and unite myself to my Higher and Divine Genius..."

But even this poetic expression is inadequate and misleading, for we
are already more than human. We are Divine, and it is only or ignorance
that keeps us from realizing it, and thus we suffer, and make others
suffer, for misery loves company.

They are not so much two ways of saying the same thing, but two
points-of-view as they observe the same thing. The first example, to
"rise" to Godhood, is the Old Aeon view: we are "fallen" creatures, who
must find our way back. Even the ancient Greeks believed that the human
soul "fell" into the physical world, and was hurt and damaged in the
process, but even they looked on the path as one of healing, not
"redemption". The Eastern point-of-view (and that of New Aeon Paganism)
is one of innate divinity in all things, including ourselves. I believe
this is the healthier way to look at it. But there are those people for
whom the Old way is better suited -- those who are so damaged and in
pain that they must regain their own sense of self-divinity before they
can do anything else. This is the essence of the Rightt Hand path.

Then there are those who are already "awake", but need to refine
themselves to be better vessels for their Divinity. This is the
essence of the Left Hand path. But the paths meet and converge in ways
that are difficult to describe.

Uniting with Deity and becoming deity, same thing said in different ways.
I like the way you said it too.
