Subject: [ASHA] Restoring natural forests is the best way to remove atmospheric carbon
To: <asha-kis...@googlegroups.com>

The pitch in compensatory afforestation built up post FC Act, and has been untiringly pursued by forest departments to “replace” forests lost to mining and “development”, and of late by corporations and CSR initiatives, claiming it will fix climate change.

Old growth forests cannot be replaced by such afforestation and it is well known newer ‘forests’ (more than half of which are plantations) don’t do much to fix carbon.

As this recent publication in Nature reveals, about half of the CDM effort is invested in planting monoculture, which don’t help solve the problem. But worryingly, it presents corporations and governments in good light, as if they are working on real solutions.

Ranjit Daniels of Care Earth shares this  paper from Nature and also a popular interpretation: https://e360.yale.edu/features/why-green-pledges-will-not-create-the-natural-forests-we-need

Right on Marie !  We need to save as much of our greenery as possible, and  continue to grow trees of all varieties wherever possible.

I have a small tract of hilly land with a variety of old growth trees and bamboos, which I plan to retain as is.  I have benches set at strategic locations where I can retreat to and sit in contemplation, listening to  the delightful sound of birds of every hue and sound.
It takes a few months to grow an ugly concrete forest.  It takes centuries to recreate the forest, and it is the mix of old growth trees
that may not provide fruits, which adds to the vibrancy of the vegetation.

Important piece here. And fully agree that the green washing that monoculture forests offer corporate  entities is a terribly misleading bait for people to buy into the reforestation argument.
