While logged into my gmail if I leave it open while surfing the
internet or step away from the computer for a while and then come back
to send an email, a message pops up that says I am no longer logged
into my account and need to sign in. However, in the upper right hand
corner, it says I AM still signed in. I have to close gmail completely
and re-sign in.

When I do this, anything I have typed in an email is lost. It will not
allow me to save to draft folder because it says I am no longer logged
into my account.

Please help. Is there any way to set gmail so that it does NOT "Time
Out?"
Thank you.

I leave a window open almost all day with GMail loaded in it and never have this problem.  Are you sure that your cookies aren't been cleared?  If your cookies are getting deleted, then the next time GMail tries to do something (like save the draft you are composing), it will kick you out since the cookie is what tells GMail that you are in fact logged in.

Being signed into chat has nothing to do with being signed into GMail.  Right now, I am signed OUT of chat, but am signed IN to GMail.

Nick is right, I never use chat, but am always logged in to Gmail.  Even if the laptop goes into Sleep mode, Gmail is still waiting for me when I wake it up again.  And I am on a wireless link.

I sometimes have the same problem.
In my case, eaven thow im signed into email with "remember me" and in to "chat", it still times out.
Could it be becouse of my connection, im using UMTS - EDGE modem. However i dont get the same message all the time. Once it is , your ISP is blocking chat or mail. Other times it says only - gmail is having problems with your connection, trying to reconect in ... seconds. And still other times it doesnt say anything, but still does not work. I also get the #008 error many times.

I Guess That I Forgot That Chat Does Not Have To Be Open.

Gmail doesn't time you out. If you are being disconnected, I think it is
not by Gmail. Perhaps it is your Internet service provider that is
disconnecting your connection to the 'net.
