When I open my inbox this always defaults to older version. The same
applies for contacts. I can only enter a new contact if I click on
older version and change this to new version. I am using Internet
Explorer 7. How can I change my settings so that new version becomes
my default. Don't understand why gmail has an older version and a new
version - what is the point of the latter?

It is not as good as the older IMHO.

Are you sure it's actually defaulting to the old version as the
default? When using IE7 it should be the new one by default... if,
when you first open Gmail, the link in the top right says "Older
version," that means you are in the new version.

The point of allowing you to switch to the old version is in case
there are any compatibility problems you might run into. The new
version has more features and has received a lot of speed
optimizations.

Thanks Ryan.  Clearly my pc must be defaulting to the new version.  The trouble is I don't recognise or understand the difference.  I still have the problem when trying to install a new contact.  If I use what you have now convinced me is the new version I get the message "Error saving data: operation failed. Please try again in a moment"  I then find that If I click on Older Version in the toolbar at the top right I can enter the new contact without any problem.  The help line suggests that my anti virus program might be the cause.  I use PC Tools Internet Security but I am reluctant to disable that.  Also why does it work in the older version but not the new?

Another point.  I notice that your email address uses gmail.com.Do I have to use googlemail.com in full in my own address or will this work with gmail instead?

Gmail.com is the norm, but in a few countries, other companies managed to trademark that domain before Gmail added availability in those countries. If you signed up with googlemail.com, then you are most likely in a country where this happened, and in that case, sometimes Gmail.com will work but not always. To be safe, I would stick with googlemail.com, at least for your own email address.

Any emails sent to ianh...@gmail.com will appear in your inbox just
like those sent to the googlemail.com version of it. The only context
that the gmail/googlemail distinction is majorly important is logging
in.

As for your antivirus software, if the Gmail Help says it will cause
that error, then that's the problem. There are other AV options which
don't have the problem, assuming you don't need some particular
feature that PC Tools offers. I personally love Avast, which has a
free (other than completely spam free registration). The home version
can be found at http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

If you are accessing gmail from a bookmark then make sure it doesn't
have "?ui=1" at the end of the address. This will default you to the
old interface. I had the same problem until I updated my bookmark.
