I have never had such a button.  It is my greatest annoyance with Gmail contacts, that I cannot delete a contact from a group.

Thanks Zack,  and now I see what Rochelle was talking about.  Indeed if you have more than 20 groups, you cannot see the "remove from..."  option at the bottom of the drop-down.  Therefore you cannot remove them from a group.  Since I had always had more than 20 groups, I had never seen the option.

This is a serious bug, and easily fixed.  Rochelle, report the bug to Gmail.  As I will also do.

Using the old gmail version allows me to use a "delete from group"
button.
Why this button is not on the newere version is beyond me. It's much
more user friendly than to scroll down a list, that is IF you are able
to scroll to the bottom of the list, as I am not.

Tried that Ryan, it increases the useable groups by 5 or 6, but it still has the same problem.  Surely a delete from group button at the top of the page would be easier.

The Delete from and Add to buttons should enable adding to / deleting
from multiple groups.
Another welcome option would be to be able to open Contacts in a
separate window like Calendar.

You're right. I don't have enough groups/whatever to test if this
solves the problem, but people might want to try the contact manager
on its own to see if it behaves better:

A related question to the Delete Contacts - is it possible to remove
names from the My Contacts or, alternatively, is there a way to search
for or list contacts that have not been assigned a group?
