Lord, it would be such a relief to have emails (incoming and outgoing)
listed just one at a time all in a row according to date and time
sent. Is that too much to ask? This clumping is driving me nuts and
into the arms of some other letter carrier.

Well, grouping messages into a conversation is one of GMail's key features, so if it's that much of a problem for you, GMail may not be the right service for you.  However, the ability to turn off conversation view is one of the options on the GMail suggestion page, so it seems that they are considering implementing that should enough people OFFICIALLY request it.
You also have the option of accessing your GMail account using POP or IMAP, and there is no client out there (that I know of anyway) that has a conversation view, so that will get you what you desire.

This "feature" really pisses me off too. It's absolutely horrible in
every respect. If it was good, it would be done by other mail
providers, not just gmail. If I send out a mass e-mail, and people
reply back to me with individual conversations about how I'm doing,
what's up, etc., now I have all of these random e-mails stacked in
one? What the hell is with that? It's terrible! It's also downright
confusing because it makes no sense. I like to see my e-mails in a
nice order by date and time, like every other human, like every other
mail service. Gmail needs to ditch that crap as soon as possible.

You need to look up what "random" means. It certainly is not random.
They are responding to YOUR mass emailing. It's a perfectly logical
place for the reply to go -- and especially helpful if someone sends
you a short reply without the context of the original message.

Personally, I love the conversations feature. From time to time, I
would actually like to be able to COMBINE unlike subjects into
conversations under GMail. But I do agree it would be handy at times
to also break conversations apart.

I think the point here is that whether you like the conversation
threading or not, there should be an option to turn it off.

I have submitted a request to add this feature and there is a lot of
debate around whether this is a good feature.

Personally - I find that having the option to do something, or not, is
a good feature.

I agree 100%. But, being a programmer, I know that such flexibility
can sometimes be a big problem. Especially if various options can
conflict with each other. And it can make testing a nightmare when
you consider all of the possible permutations...even aside from all
the various browsers...

I don't envy Google programmers.

Conversations are cool. But sometimes you need to exert some control
over them, or ignore the grouping entirely. Features I would like to
see are:

- Ability to regroup emails into conversations that make more sense to
me. That includes being able to remove or add any message to a
conversation. If that means modifying the subject of the message,
fine. But it would be better if there were another way.
- Ability to label an individual message in a conversation without
labeling the whole thing.
- Ability to disable conversation view and just view individual
messages in date time sequence.

Those are specifically on the check-list of the suggestion page, so
there's a lot of hope for them. I often click at least one of them
when I submit my suggestions.

Conversation View changes
Turn Conversation View off
Ability to add or remove messages from conversations
Filter or label a message within a conversation

I agree!!!  I really don't like this feature at all.  I have lost a lot of photos my daughter has sent, by Googles grouping.  It really is not a good feature at all.

Just turn it off then. This has been discussed hundreds of times as a simple web search would show. Settings->General->Conversation view off.

Turn off Conversation View.  It is located in the settings on the first page.
