Is there a problem with GMail parsing MIME attachments? I received an
attached PDF file that GMail showed as 0k in size, which was also the
size when I attempted to save it. I had to click "View original" and
save the original email with the MIME attachment to a file, then open
it with an external email reader, Thunderbird, which had no problem
showing the original PDF attachment (84 KB).

I've pasted the beginning & end of the file attachment:

Gmail usually don't have problems with that. Was it a "first level"
attachment, or was it nested?
