Yep, looks like it's a new feature that they are rolling out to
everyone. I didn't have it earlier today but now have it. Here's more
info:

Delete button - the feature all Gmail users have been waiting for has
arrived!!!

They took so long to incoporate such as basic feature, but now millions
in the world will have reason to celebrate.

I'm really really really happy this feature is now part of the gmail
interface - thanks Google!

Why???? Why do you have Gmail if you plan on deleting emails?  The whole purpose of Gmail is to have an email service that you never have to delete from.  I have never understood why so many people have been asking, begging even, for this stupid button.

reason I throw out old newspapers! I prefer my mega(and growing)
storage for other non-clutter. Thank You Google!

Why would I want to keep my daily personal TV guide emails for
instance? Knowing The Simpsons was on at 6pm on October 24 2005 won't
be much use to me in 10 years will it?

What about emails that come back with undelivered errors - not worth
keeping.

What is something is sent to me twice, maybe with attachments - I don't
want to keep both - it takes up space.

Some stuff I know I won't want later - so why archive it?

There are many reasons why people want to delete stuff - you shouldn't
have to go via a pull-down menu to do.

Thanks again, Google!

Well said, Craig.  There's nothing wrong with deleting emails.  There's plenty of stuff that we get that we KNOW we have no reason to ever refer to again.  Just because there's plenty of space in Gmail doesn't mean we have to fill it with trash.

As for the Delete button, I take it that this replaces the delete option that appeared under More Actions?  I thought there was a delete option there before but I don't see it now.

Great. I'm impressed of Google that they actually listen to users'
concerns.

According to a preliminary search of the archives at Google Groups the
"delete button" issue was first raised in August 2004.

I didn't have the delete button or the RSS feed on my account, but I just went into the Settings for my gmail account and changed the language from English (UK) to English (US) and I know have all of those facilities and more.

Personally I'd be more than happy if they made a 'Mark as read' button
cause I get lots of emails I have to have but don't need to read and
since there's no 'mark as read' option in filters /that would be THE
REAL THING to celebrate!/ I have to click and click and click....

I don't get all the excitement with the 'Delete button' - if you use
it that often maybe you should stop using email? (:

This has been an ongoing controversial issue, and my observations here
are likely nit-picking a bit too much...

My problem with the new button is not that it exists (I do like it) but
that Google changed the concept from "Move to trash" to "Delete". The
Delete button does not do what it says it does. Clicking the "Delete"
button does not "delete" the message--it moves it to the "Trash" Label.
I know, I know, it's symantics. I've heard people say, "That's how it
is done in the UI world." and "They still provide an "undelete"
capability, consistant with other UI's." But still, to me, it is
misleading. Yes, "Delete" is a familiar concept (and by extension,
"undelete"), but remember that Google has tried to innovate with Gmail.
Promoting the "delete" concept undermines their concept of saving email
for later retrieval. While it was never a popular decision to make the
delete/trash function more difficult to use, it really made me, an avid
Gmail user, think more about what was important to save and what was
not.

Of course, over time, this will simply become a non-issue because we
will all forget that it was ever an issue... ;-)

If you are using Firefox, you can try out the Greasemonkey extension
along with this: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/2196 in order to
get a "Mark as read/unread" button. An alternative is the excellent
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/2432 that gives you extra keyboard
shortcuts, including 'r' for marking emails as read.

More information is included in those pages.

We will forget that ...what was an issue? :-)

But seriously, Jim, I couldn't agree more with you. Google is trying
to innovate with Gmail, and promoting the storage of emails may help
the user think a little more about what's needed like in your case,
but mostly helps them build a more accurate profile of you. They will
of course be considerate of their users and try to accommodate them,
but I expect (just like any other company) to put their own interests
in front.

As such, this new Delete button seems to be contradicting what they've
been preaching so far. Did they succumb to pressure from users and
media? I am more inclined to think that the addition of the button
helps Google in some way, even if it's only from user satisfaction. It
is, after all, an element reminiscent of interfaces that most users
are used to.

Besides, I'm already used to archiving everything. The vast majority
of my emails on Gmail is still mailing list traffic, which I know I
can throw away if I start running out of space. And since Gmail
increases capacity continuously, the only way to overrun its expansion
rate would be to keep big attachments - which I do delete.

Great point you make Jim. I agree that "Delete" is symantically
incorrect, although for your average user it is probably more
understandable.

Personally I don't delete most e-mails. Sometimes I delete messages
from mailing lists I am on that I don't have time to read. I'd rather
do this than mark them as read when I actually haven't read them.

I like to delete all the emails that I know I don't want and will never
have need of. What's the use in keeping all those spam emails and the
ones that aren't relevent to anything else. I'd much rather use that
'unlimited space' for emails that I may need later and pictures. I mean
whats the point in archiving something if you are never going to use it
again. Just get rid of it..

They do have a "mark as read" option. It's in the list under "more
actions" where your delete used to be

The delete button just showed up while I was writing the notes for
the next Gmail Podcast. Very strange. I noticed it was listed on
the "New Features" link at the top, I was reading about it, went back
to the conversations index and THERE IT WAS!

Kind of weird. Maybe it's officially released now? Is anyone else
NOT seeing it using US/English settings? Try reading about it and
seeing if it shows up? Maybe that's their clever way to get you to
RTFM?

Unfortunately the 'Archive/Delete/Spam [dropdown]' bar is not availeble
when you open a mail via the personalized Google page and you click a
new mail the GMail section! This would be a great addition!!!
