Yes, this is a bogus email.  Make sure you select the "Report Phishing" option in the drop down menu next to reply.  Always keep in mind that NO company will EVER ask you for your username/password.

Please don't reply directly to an individual without being asked to as it is considered rude.

In short, all of the emails are being sent your you.  When you sign up for a GMail account, you reserve ALL variations of the username you select.  In other words, I could send an email to dr.dan.march or drdanmarch or Dr.DAn.MARc.h etc and they will all be sent to you.  GMail does this so if you forget to tell someone about, or someone forgets to add a dot in your email address, or an uppercase letter, they will still be able to email you.

For security reasons though, when you sign in to GMail, you HAVE to use the EXACT username that you first signed up with.  That includes any dots and/or uppercase letters that you original used.

Take a look at this page for more information: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=10313

I don't know how to interpret this, but wonder if it could be
phishing, or worse - or maybe it's just a Google/G-mail glitch.
Here's what happened/happens.  When I created my account, I used some
upper-case letters in my address.  Sometimes, The System changes them
to lower-case; sometimes it does not.  In a similar situation, AOL
seems not to care.  I get the mail in the same account whether it was
addressed to my screen name with or without upper case letters.  G-
mail, however, appears not to be working this way and I'm left
wondering where all that other email is going.  For example, from my
AOL account, I wrote two test e-mails to my G-mail account - one with
and one without upper-case.  Although from some parts of G-mail, the
System clearly shows the account with the same-as-originally-requested
capitalization, ONLY the all-lower-case test e-mail from AOL was
received.

Where is all the other - with upper and lower case - mail?

Thanks,
Dan

Actually 'case' does not matter for Internet email addresses. (I believe
this is specified in one of the RFCs that defines the Internet standards,
but I'm not an RFC junkie so I can't guarantee this with absolute
certainty.)

Case doesn't matter for Gmail logins either! You can login with upper or
lower case when logging in and Gmail doesn't care. But it is true that you
must specify any periods exactly as when you created the account.

Sending test emails to yourself is unfortunately tricky in Gmail. Gmail
recognizes the email sent to yourself and discards the received copy. (One
of Gmail's little annoying quirks.)

OK, I fell for this. Not sure why - sleep deprivation or something.
It really looked official but I did worry. I had no idea that this
group existed. I looked on the main page for help. Now how do I
recover from the horrendous results? I lost my account, my blog, my
saved mail, and contacts.

Gmail apparently displays differently in other's pcs. I do not have a
drop down menu marked "Report Phishing" next to Reply. If I go into
more options I can report the message to Gmail for various reasons,
phishing not being one of them

No, "Report Phishing" is one of the items IN the drop-down menu next to "Reply". The drop-down menu is only marked with a triangle pointing down.

"More Options" is a link in the groups, not gmail. Are you sure
you're not confusing terms?

You will find the option (Report as phishing) here: NEXT TO THE REPLY TAB is an arrow pointing down, click on this arrow and another set of options is available
to choose from. The Report as phishing is the fourth option from the bottom under "DELETE THIS MESSAGE".....

Hope this helps you.....

Lately... In the past three to four months Spam is making it through
to Inbox directly and skipping the filters from Google Spam. What
group can I report this to? Is there a forum for it? Does Google knows
about this? I'm not the only one I guess with this problem as some
friends have also reported Spam is not getting filtered as before.

This is not uncommon as spammers often change their techniques in order to bypass spam filters.  The only thing you can do is click the "Report Spam" button to teach GMail's filter what the new method spammers are using is.

My experience is exactly the opposite ... I was having a lot of spam showing
up in my Inbox a few months ago, which has since mostly stopped. Not
everyone gets the same kinds of spam. Not everyone's spam filter works the
same way either.

I don't think you need to report it to anyone. Just keep training your
account's spam filter by hitting the Report Spam button as often as
necessary.

I'm sure Google knows about spam, they are engaged in an ongoing spam-war
with the spammers. Gmail was originally created as an in-house email system
for Google employees only, and chances are very good many Google employees
currently use Gmail and some of them are probably seeing the same kinds of
variations in effectiveness of the spam filter, that you and I do.

Even though Google strives to make their spam filters more effective, the
people who send spam also work hard to find ways around their filters. It
is a never-ending battle, and at times neither side wins.

And clicking "Report Spam" does more than train your filters, it truly
reports it to Google to improve their overall spam fighting
techniques.

Thanks to the several contributors who put me right on the report
phishing point. As a silver surfer 70 next birthday it is never too
late to learn
