Depends. A lot of people seem quite happy with either Avast! or AVG,
so you would probably be as well. Plus, both are free.

How about updates to the definitions? WHich is more reliable to Avast or AVG? How do they compare to licensed softwares like Symantec or McAfee?

I personally don't use either, because my primary machine belongs to
my employer and I am told what software to use, and all my secondary
machines run Linux. Perhaps someone else who has direct experience
with one or the other could respond?

I use avg and it works great for me. I've never really had any problems
with it, and it has automatic update and scanning.

i'd say the best free antivirus is Norton. yes, its free with a free 6
moth subscription from Google.
http://pack.google.com/installer_thankyou.html?stub=on&cinst=on&ci_symantec=on&ciNum=0#done

the above link is just norton 2005 with everything else removed, if you
dont trust me go to pack.google.com and do it yourself!

well worth it, i have no real problems with it, but if money was no
object i'd definetely use nod32 because of light footprint, good
updates and speedy scanning

well i reinstalled windows cause it needed doing anyway :P that way it
doesn't know you've allready had your 6 month term.

but 6 months is a long time, i wouldnt call it a shoirt term slution as
most subscriptions are aout 12 months anyway.

I'm stickng with norton for now.

fair enough. this question is up with the most frequently documented,
so you're best bet would be to search google.

at the end of the day, as long as your machine stays virus free without
too much slow down, it doesnt matter!!!

be sure and quote (use "Reply with quote" so we know what you're talking about. I'm going to try out avast for a while, it looks pretty good.

I love avast. It's simply and it's really good. With resident protection it catches viruses before they can actually enter into my system.
