Skype clients can make calls to anyone in US or Canada for free.
Landlines cannot, however, call Skypers for free.

Oops... I misstated my point.

The program is free. It has always been free. Caleb is dead-on.

However, calling real phone numbers has NOT been free. It looks like
they're running a promotion for free calls until the end of the year
(as he posted in the first message in the thread).

So how does this work? Do you have to sign up for an account? Do you
have to prepay and then get it free for the end of the year and then
it's going to start charging you?
When is Google Talk going to be able to do this as well as text chat to
other IM's such as MSN Messenger and Yahoo?
