Return Routing over water

My deLuo SiRFstarIII USB GPS receiver has been quite reliable helping
me navigate via a WinXP laptop in the USA with Streets & Trips and in
western France and Italy with AutoRoute Europe.
THE QUESTION: I have a small fishing boat and would like to use the
deLuo receiver to navigate some of the inland and offshore bodies of
water where I sail. I can carry aboard an Acer netbook, 1g Ram, `160mb
HD. Is there some all-purpose software that you can recommend that
will route me away and back from my starting point. Please understand
that I don't seek nautical charts for my day trips. I merely desire a
means to find my way back to home port when visibility is bad.
