I enjoy reading your blogs about life and all the other stuff that goes on around it, but I have not been keeping up lately because I have been caught up in all the other stuff that swirls around life. So, tonight in a fit of procrastination I burned up some minutes reading some of your blogs. I came across a blog you wrote back in June and I whole hardily agree with you about Autism. There where multiple points I agree with you on, but two stand out for me. First, you are greater then the sum of your parts and those characteristics that have been identified as "deficits" do not need to be fixed. The world, and I know I am biased in this, needs to learn how to accept differences without calling them deficits. Second, I am tremendously glad you realize that public education failed you, but that you did not fail public education. As a teacher who works with gifted kids I see public education fail our children daily. I choose to continue to teach in the public arena because not every child has the resources, the availability, or the option of private or alternative education. I stand in the storm of public education hoping that if there are enough teachers dedicated to gifted students and gifted education along the way, most of our gifted children will have a fighting chance and survive the public education system. Public education is structured to operate at minimal levels. The goal is to bring every child up to the minimal requirements; thus resulting in not only bringing up the low but also pulling the high down. Public education is a reflection of our society. I could go into the current philosophies of public education, but suffice it to say public education is currently strictly assessment orientated. There is no thought for the student as an individual. We are building machines out of living being. Our public education system is creating the real life version of Borgs, if you are a Star Trek fan.
