Wow!!
There is so much naivete in our nation it hurts!!
“between January and April this year alone, the country recorded over 1,300 fire outbreaks resulting in the death of 173 people”, and the solution we have is this:
“he suspects inferior cables and arson are responsible for recent outbreaks at the country’s markets”
Suspects? How long will it take before they are sure?
This is part of the debate Kwame Pianim and I are having.
There is no way a people who have not been accustomed to or experienced modern ways of dealing with technology, electrical appliances, electronics, analysis of failures, cause of fires, can claim to have the same expertise as some of us who have made a living solving these problems for decades. No need to brag or put anybody down, but for the record and discussion only I have for example held positions in Quality and Reliability Engineering and Failure Analysis and later Management for at least four to five American companies and to German (Siemens and Osram), over a decade, and I will laugh my head off if anybody thinks they are in Ghana and compare their knowledge to mine. Ghanaians are either so proud they don’t want to ask, or too stupid to ask, but neither of them is the real truth – the real truth is that people in these offices and leadership have no human sympathy for the people whose lives and property are being lost! No!! No! They don’t see it as their responsibility to see to the safety and security of their fellow humans even though they are being paid.
Kwame, this goes deeper than mere patriotism. It borders on evil! Yes! Evil exists too much in our society! When people in authority don’t care to the point others die, that is evil!! We have over 100,000 die each year due to water borne and malaria infections! What are our leaders doing about them? Did Kufuor did anything we can list? Did John Atta Mills do anything? Has John Mahama proposed any solutions for these?
Some Ghanaians we have seen simply collecting their pay and could care less to work for that pay! They are collecting statistical data and no real intent on solving the problems or mean of preventing future losses.
A stronger measure of leadership is what I am advocating where the President himself will have to set some goals of service and demand them from all public workers and those who have not achieved them get fired! That is not witch-hunting. My suggestion is that if we want a better Ghana we should enforce laws and we should be strict. For example those who stole public funds or caused financial losses to the government and the people should never be forgotten and we should never have a statute of limitations on such public theft and crimes.
What do you guys think?
I BCC some of these mail to Dr. Raymond Atuguba, and I am fully aware it’s too much but sooner or later he will pass some of them up the to the President and he will know what we think and expect.
Kwaku, being a dual citizen and fire fighter,, Hmmm!! I don’t know who put those words in the constitution but they will live and die and regret it for our nation.

Subject: Is this why a Dual Citizen cannot be a Chief Fire Officer?
The Ghana National Fire Service may soon face financial difficulties if the trend of fire outbreaks in the country continues.
According to the Service, it has spent almost 10 million Ghana cedis in the first quarter of this year alone in fighting fire across the country.
Chairman of the governing council of the Fire Service Alhaji Amadu Sorogo says between January and April this year alone, the country recorded over 1,300 fire outbreaks resulting in the death of 173 people.
He told Joy News’ parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey, though the Service will not disclose details of investigations conducted into recent fires, he suspects inferior cables and arson are responsible for recent outbreaks at the country’s markets.
He also complained about lack of cooperation from the public when personnel are fighting fire. Fire fighters are also faced with the challenge of access to fire sources due to poor planning, he pointed out.
Alhaji Amadu Sorogo said many fire hydrants within communities are dry; while unapproved structures have also been mounted on some of the hydrants.
In Parliament, some members contributing on the fire outbreaks in the country raised doubts about the effectiveness of the security agencies in unraveling the mysteries surrounding the fires.
